Data access: what is free, what is prepared on request
Everything shown on this site is free to read, reuse and build on. Some things are not on the site, and are prepared on request. This page says which is which, so nobody has to guess.
Free
Every page on woodcomp.world, and every figure on it, is published under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. You may copy it, republish it and build on it, as long as you credit WoodComp and share what you build under the same terms. That covers the facility pages, the country pages with their wood supply and fibre balance, the company pages, the map, the changes feed, the knowledge base and the methodology.
Each facility, country and company page carries a "How to cite" block with a permanent address. Facility pages cite the WoodComp ID, which never changes even when a mill is renamed or sold.
The RSS feed of sourced changes is free and stays free.
On request
The site is the product for readers. For people who need the data as a file, we prepare curated exports on request rather than offering a bulk download:
- cross-sections such as capacity per company or per region, or the fibre balance for a set of countries, in one file;
- time series, where we hold them;
- sub-national data, which is not published on the site.
Tell us what you need and what it is for, using the request form in the facility list or by email, and we will come back to you. Every request is read by a person. Curated exports are becoming a paid product; requests we receive now are how we decide what to build first.
We do not provide raw dumps of the whole database. What is on the site can be read there, page by page, under the open licence above.
Journalists, researchers and students
If you are writing about the industry or studying it, say so in your request. The citation block on each page is written for you, and the methodology page explains how every figure is sourced and how often we measure our own error rate.
What we will not do
We do not sell exclusivity on anything shown on the site: what is published is published for everyone. We do not estimate figures we have not found a source for, and a file we prepare carries the same sources and caveats as the pages do.
