Sawn Timber Products

Sawn timber is a commodity in name only. What leaves a sawmill ranges from rough green boards sold by the cubic metre to engineered components sold by the piece for a named building, and the difference in value between the two ends of that range is larger than the difference between any two pulp grades. The product mix is therefore the main thing that distinguishes one sawmill from another, more than capacity does.

The grading split decides the market

A board's destination is set by which grading system it passes. Appearance grading under EN 1611-1 sorts by how the surface looks and sends the clean material to joinery, cladding and furniture. Strength grading under EN 338 and EN 14081-1 sorts by what the board can carry and sends it to construction. The two are separate systems with separate rules, and neither grade can be read off the other with confidence: see sawmilling for the evidence behind that.

The market consequence is that a sawmill selling into both is running two sorting logics over the same production. Which logic captures a given board decides which customer it can reach, which is why grading equipment rather than saw capacity is often the constraint on product mix.

Further processing at the mill

Most of the value added after sawing happens on the same site.

  • Planing brings the board to an exact cross section and a finished surface. Planed goods are sold to a dimension rather than to a nominal size.
  • Impregnation forces preservative into the wood for outdoor exposure. Treated timber is a distinct product with its own end of life handling, since the preservative follows the wood.
  • Finger jointing glues short lengths end to end into long defect free members, governed for structural use by EN 15497. It converts trim offcuts, which would otherwise be chips, into a saleable product, so it moves volume from the fibre stream back into the timber stream.

Engineered wood

Engineered wood products glue smaller pieces into larger structural members, and they are the fastest changing part of the sector because they compete directly with steel and concrete rather than with each other.

  • Glulam (glued laminated timber, EN 14080): boards glued face to face into beams and columns that can span far beyond the length of any tree. The oldest of the engineered products and the most established.
  • Cross laminated timber (EN 16351): boards glued in alternating crosswise layers into large panels used as walls and floor slabs. CLT is what makes tall timber buildings possible, because a crosswise laminated panel is dimensionally stable in two directions.
  • Laminated veneer lumber: veneers peeled from the log and glued with the grain parallel, giving very predictable strength. LVL starts from veneer rather than from boards, which places it partly in the panel industry.

Engineered wood matters for the fibre balance for a reason worth stating precisely. Because a laminated panel or beam is built from many small pieces rather than one large one, it can use shorter, finger-jointed boards and lower strength grades than solid structural timber allows: European CLT commonly pairs higher grade boards in the load-bearing layers with lower grades such as C16 in the cross layers, and glulam places its lower grade laminations away from the most stressed zones. The boards are still strength graded, and most of the material is the same construction grade timber a sawmill would sell anyway. But at the margin it widens the structural market downward, absorbing grades and lengths that would otherwise go to packaging and pallet stock, and there is active research into whether small diameter and low value logs, which today go largely to pulpwood, can follow the same route.

Where the products go

Construction dominates. Within it, the split between structural and non structural use decides which grading system governs and therefore which part of the sawmill's output can serve it. Packaging and pallets take large volumes of lower grades and are relatively price driven. Joinery, furniture and cladding take the clean appearance grades. Fencing, decking and other outdoor uses take treated material.

The pattern behind all of it: a single log yields boards across several grades, so a sawmill cannot choose to make only its most profitable product. It sells the whole distribution, and the mix is set by the logs it buys.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between glulam and CLT?

Glulam is boards glued face to face into linear beams and columns. CLT is boards glued in crosswise layers into flat panels used as walls and slabs.

Why is finger jointing interesting beyond the product itself?

It turns short offcuts that would otherwise become chips into saleable timber, moving volume from the fibre stream back into the timber stream.

Does a sawmill choose its product mix?

Only partly. Every log yields boards of several grades, so the mill sells the whole distribution and the mix follows from the logs it buys and the grading it can perform.
