Pulp mills and sawmills in Slovakia

WoodComp tracks 1 operating pulp mill and 7 sawmills in Slovakia, with capacity, status and location as open data. Slovakia holds 1.9 M ha of forest, 40 % of its land area, led by European beech and Norway spruce. The fibre balance below sets their estimated wood demand against the national removals.

Introduced species hold 1.3 % of the reported growing stock. FAO ranks the ten largest native and five largest introduced species, together 98.7 % of the total.

The facilities on this page report Spruce (6), Beech (1), Larch (1), Pine (1), Fir (1) and Mixed Hardwood (1) as furnish. The species matching that demand hold 75.0 % of the growing stock. Removals by species are not reported internationally, so this is a comparison of demand and standing forest, not a balance.

estimated industry demand vs reported removals
Estimate. The demand side covers only the facilities WoodComp has mapped, at reported capacity, converted with published factors. Removals are official statistics.

Sawlogs

Removals3.4 M m3/y2.6 coniferous, 0.7 non-coniferous
Estimated sawmill intake~1.6 M m3/y48 % of removals, from 5 of 7 operating sawmills

Pulp fibre

Pulpwood removals3.2 M m3/y0.8 coniferous, 2.3 non-coniferous
Sawmill chips, estimated1-1.4 M m3/y30-40 % of sawlog removals, joins the pulp fibre supply
Estimated pulp-mill wood demand2.5-3.5 M m3/y55-85 % of estimated supply, from 1 of 1 operating pulp mills

Demand is derived at render time from reported capacities and the published factor table: sawn output at 2.0 m3 of log per m3 sawn, pulp at 2.3 to 5.3 m3 per tonne depending on process and furnish. Sawmill chips are estimated at 30 to 40 percent of sawlog removals (FAO conversion factor material balances) and shown as their own supply component, never merged with the removals. Log imports and exports are not modelled, and demand above the estimated supply can mean either imports or capacity above actual production. Where coverage is low the balance measures our dataset, not the market.

Forest, species and production figures: FAO FRA 2025 and FAOSTAT (2024-2025). Increment and fellings: Eurostat European Forest Accounts (2023), forest available for wood supply, over bark. Removals by assortment: Eurostat roundwood removals (2023), under bark.
